"Cav's Runner Fulfills Dream!"
| Coldwater
High School's Marty Schoenherr remembers his first trip to "the
Shoe" well. "I helped out at my older sister's track
meets. She was on the track teams that one three consecutive state
titles (94-96)," the senior said. "I remember thinking
this is awesome." A few years later Marty would begin his own running career. "I started running distance in junior high and have been doing it ever since," he said. Marty also benefited from his older brother, Cory Schoenherr, who was a standout runner for the Cavs and at Bluffton College. "He's a mentor and training partner for me," he said. Marty quickly began mentoring opponents on the track. As a junior Schoenherr anchored the Cavs' 4x800 team that finished 4th at the state meet and set a school record (7:59.10). He also finished 11th in the 1600 (4:26). In the fall of 2002, Schoenherr finished 9th at the state cross country meet, earning all-ohio honors with a personal best 16:29 at Scioto Downs. Schoenherr's senior campaign ended at the regional meet this past fall. "I didn't make it to state this year. I fell twice at regionals. I just couldn't recover quick enough, "the senior stated. Marty logged 30 miles a week during the winter in preparation for his final track season. Schoenherr helped Coldwater to the MAC title in boys track this year. He finished second in the 800, won the 1600, anchored the 4x400 and 4x800 teams. He will fulfill his dream of running at the state meet in Columbus this spring, although he won't have much time to sit around. Schoenherr finished second in the 800 at regionals with a personal best 1:56. He also qualified in the 1600 finishing third, and he will again run the anchor leg in the 3200 relay at state. The state meet will be a fitting end to an excellent running career. Marty will attend the Ohio State University next year, but will not run for the Buckeyes. Schoenherr, who carries a 4.06 g.p.a, will pursue a degree in history education. Good luck Marty. |

"Krueger Makes Another Trip to State!"
| For
some athletes making it to state in cross country and track is an
accomplishment. For Versailles' senior Trisha Krueger it has become
old habit. Krueger will make her seventh appearance at the
state meet when she and the lady Tigers compete in the DIII 3200
relay. In track, Trisha has qualified with the Tigers' 4x800 team
her freshmen, junior, and senior years. The lone exception was
during her sophomore season. Versailles finished a close 5th at the Dayton
regional. As a freshmen, Trisha wasn't the only Krueger on the team. "My older sisters, Melissa (Sr.) and Jessica (So.), along with Jackie Luthman were on the 4x800 team. It was kinda cool going to state with my sisters," she said. Imagine what it was like for the girls' parents, which whom Trisha credits much of her success to, "My parents have supported us and been at every meet. They're awesome!" The Krueger sisters also made a trip to the state cross country meet the previous fall, finishing 12th. They returned the following year with a 9th place finish and in 2002 the Lady Tigers made it three in a row finishing 6th with Trisha placing 41st. With the addition of three strong freshmen (Kristen Smith, Caitlin Liette, and Kristen Grillot), Versailles cruised through the regular season headed for a collision course with perennial powerhouse and league rival, Minster. In what will be remembered as one of the best Troy regional team races, Versailles edged Minster by a point capturing the school's first regional title. "It was hard to believe," Krueger said of the outcome. "We didn't know really know how to react. We were shocked!" With Krueger leading the way. Versailles proved the regional title wasn't a fluke by winning the state championship a week later Trisha finished 10th, clocking in at 19:24 earning all-state honors. According to Krueger the state title was extra special, "Believe it or not, it was the first girls' state championship in school history." Trisha will continue her running career at Shawnee State in Portsmouth, OH next fall. She will run cross country and major in Special Education. Good luck Trisha! |
